The Urdu Lesson

February1

I was in my Financial Accounting class today and our teacher Sohaib Jamal really did a wonderful job of making us all laugh. He is a funny person and a nice person. Today he told us that a Accounting is known as this in Urdu:

بہی کھاتا

Funny ha! Then he told us that the Manager of Bank Islami is his friend at ICMA. The Bank Islami was the first bank to have each and every english word to be translated into urdu when it comes to materials such as account opening forms and all related published material.

When they reached a point where they had to think of a translation for the “Branch Manager”, they were surprised to have this translation:

ناظم شاخ

The Bank Islami crew took this ’shaakh’ word as something that relates to monkeys a lot, and they were afraid how the general public might take it. But as it happens, all new things that you see seem unusual in the beginning but it gets normal as time goes on. Sir Sohaib told us that now, almost all banks follow this tradition of translating each and every English word into proper and actual Urdu meaning of that word.

God bless Urdu! We do not know any much of it anymore I guess. Ya shaid mei he itna nalaiq hun!
