Larry Ullman is one of my most favorite authors. One of the things that I like to do is to read his newsletter that he publishes every now and then. In his newsletter, Larry encourages his readers to ask him a question - and if the question is good, you get a free book from any of his titles!

I never ever asked any question but then a question popped up in my mind while reading his last newsletter. I asked him that question, without caring much if my question would be selected as the winning question. But guess what? I got Larry's personal reply via email and he asked me my mailing address and the title of one of his books that I wish to receive! Yes! I had won! =P It was actually a two-in-one thing: one, I won the book, and two, I got a personal email from Larry! (which is no less than a gift for me!) I sent him a thank you note and expressed my deep love for his writing style, and he replied back again with some kind words.

Anyways, after a wait of a week or so, I received a brand new copy of 'Adobe Air with AJAX: Visual QuickPro Guide' - which is one of the newer titles Larry Ullman has written. I just felt so good when I opened the book as it had a personal message from Larry and his signature over the first page! The message read: 'Kamran, I hope you like it' followed by his signature. I thought I should share this with you guys and recommend you to read Larry Ullman's books on various topics he has written about.
We often keep hearing about some PHP integration at some level or the other in all the major open source IDEs. But frankly, none of them seemed much useful to me. I somehow never liked PDT from Eclipse (and for some reason I don't like Eclipse at all :S). Now the latest milestone release of Netbeans has a cool addition: PHP Integration that really kicks! Just to mention a few highlights: great intellisense for both the builtin library functions as well as our own, full support for class browsing and intellisense for object oriented PHP as well, integrated debugger, live error checking and much much more. Do check out if you are a PHP developer! You might no longer need the expensive Zend studio to have a smooooth PHP development experience.

CutePDF is a software that lets you convert any printable document into a PDF file - and that too very easily. You simple have to select 'File > Print' and select the CutePDF option.

You can find the details here. I've been using it for a long time now and I really find it useful - it puts no ads, and it keeps the original formatting intact - which is so nice I'd say.
